EveryBody! Visual resistance in feminist health movements, 1969-2009
Start Time:  Friday, September 11, 2009 at 5:00pm
Location:     @ I space - 230 W. Superior, 2nd floor Chicago, IL
     3125879976 - ispace@illinois.edu

“Our feelings will lead us to our theory, our theory to our action, our feelings about that action to new theory and then to new action.” -Kathie Sarachild of Redstockings Radical Feminist group, presented at the First National Women’s Liberation Conference, Chicago, November 27, 1968

Every Body! presents work by artists and activists representing historical and visual exchanges around feminist health movements. By combining historical documents from the Women’s Health Movement (WHM) with presentations and performances by artists and activists working towards health care justice in the present day, Every Body! explores how feelings, theories, and actions are shaped into the creation of a place where all bodies are celebrated and health care is a human right. The exhibition begins with the visual culture of the WHM of the late 1960s-70s through posters, ephemera, and literature donated from individuals, groups, and institutions involved in the movement including the Chicago Women’s Graphics Collective and the Federation of Women’s Health Centers. The work of participating artists reflects this movement and its evolution with creative responses to and representations of the issues surrounding the health needs of women, men, and transgendered people. Every Body! is an ongoing conversation taken up and shared over many years is present in the works and projects included in this exhibition.

The exhibit includes original work from the following artists and contributors (alphabetical order):

Heather Ault, CureThis!, Chicago Women’s Graphics Collective, Christa Donner, Suzann Gage, Terri Kapsalis, Suzanne Lacy, Madsen Minax, the Pink Bloque, Favianna Rodriguez, Dewayne Sleightweight, subRosa, Laura Szumowski, Video Data Bank, Sara Welch, Women on Waves, and Faith Wilding.

STAND UP FOR CHILDREN OF THE INCARCERATED  AT A RALLY AND LEGISLATIVE HEARING

Friday, September 18, 11:30 AM - 3:00 PM

11:30 AM: Rally and Vigil
Thompson Center Plaza
NW Corner of Clark and Randolph in Chicago

12:00 PM - 3:00 PM: Legislative Hearing
James R. Thompson Center
100 W. Randolph in Chicago
16th Floor, Senate Hearing Room

Across the state of Illinois, more than 90,000 children suffer the consequences of having one or both of their parents incarcerated. These invisible victims of the criminal justice system have committed no crime, yet are left without support, stability, or care due to a parent's misdeed or mistake.
-----Until now----
On Friday September 18, the Youth and Family Committee of the Illinois House of Representatives will hold a legislative hearing regarding the needs of children with incarcerated parents. Thanks to Civic Action Network congregations--in addition to the work of the Community Renewal Society, Catalyst Chicago and the Chicago Reporter--the General Assembly will finally shine a light on so many of our forgotten children.  This is a vital first step to addressing the needs for consideration and protection of children during a parent's arrest, sentencing, time of incarceration, and re-entry.

The time to break the cycle of incarceration and trauma is now.

We need you to stand in solidarity with Illinois' children. Only a large and powerful turnout on the 18th will move our state government to act to protect these children.  leaders and activists from Civic Action Network congregations will be holding a rally and prayer vigil outside of the Thompson Center at 11:30 AM and attending the 12:00 PM hearing.  Please join us for both or either.

COME STAND IN SOLIDARITY WITH CHILDREN OF THE INCARCERATED.

You must have I.D. to enter the Thompson Center for the hearing.

Download a flyer to distribute in your congregation, organization, or office.

For more information, contact Alex Wiesendanger, (312) 673-3840, awiesendanger@communityrenewalsociety.org

Roosevelt University, Gage Gallery - 18 S Michigan Avenue

Join members of the International Socialist Organization, the Platypus Affiliated Society, the 4Star Anarchist Collective and the IWW in an afternoon of dialogue and debate amongst various members of the Left.  Panelists will attempt to clarify what their distinct politics seek to theorize and assert, and to understand what points of agreement exist amongst the Left’s various perspectives and affiliations.  In doing so, we hope our distinctions will not be erased, but rather, more deeply understood.

The Fierce Urgency of Now: Health Care and Human Rights for All
Coordinated by ARC109

Why has the debate over health care reform involved partisan politicians, media pundits, corporate interests, and hired agitators rather than the people?  Why has the single payer option been demonized on the right, the media, and even the liberal establishment? How does the broader crisis in health care in this country – clinic closings, epidemics of disease related to inequality and inaccessibility to care, indifference to wellness in our schools, our public services, the military – relate to the unwillingness to address growing economic gaps in our society and the abdication of public authority for the sake of private concerns?   How can the United States learn from other communities about how to deliver care, promote wellness, and affirm the public interest, in order to achieve human rights, here and around the world?

Speakers include Vijay Prashad and a number of local activists working for a just health care system.

For details on location and speakers, check www.ARC109.org or email info@arc109.org

2009 - 2010 WORKSHOP APPLICATION
with
Critical Encounters Artist in Residence Guillermo Gómez Peña/ La Pocha Nostra

Presented by:
Center for Teaching Excellence
Ellen Stone Belic Institute for the Study of Women and Gender in the Arts and Media
Center for Community Arts Partnerships
LGBTQ Office of Culture and Community
National Performance Network

As part of the first Critical Encounters Artist Residency, renowned Mexican-American performance artist Guillermo Gómez Peña and his San Francisco-based “trans-disciplinary arts organization,” La Pocha Nostra, will lead an intensive artist workshop on campus that incorporates and challenges ideas of race, gender, faith, and boundaries. Inspired by the past work of La Pocha Nostra, the project aims to offer participants a dynamic and multiple-stage mentorship opportunity, initiated and developed over several months, and culminating in a public presentation.

Critical Encounters is a college-wide civic engagement initiative intended to synchronize conversations between the school and the community in an ongoing dialogue around a central, socially and culturally relevant issue each academic year. Fact & Faith explores how we negotiate the tension between the need to believe and the need to know, examining the concept of truth, what shapes it, and how it is expressed.

The workshop will comprise 20 participants, including students from Columbia College and other colleges and universities, joined by practicing artists, educators and community members. The diversity of cultures, ideas, abilities, perspectives, beliefs, and aspirations of participants will inform and shape the collective work. This workshop will explore the ideas of Columbia College Chicago’s Critical Encounters Initiative: Fact & Faith, while building a bridge between the Columbia College community and beyond.

The intensive will take place from October 23 – 30, 2009. The residency culminates in the Chicago debut of La Pocha Nostra’s most recent work “Corpo Illicito” on Friday, October 30, 2009. From December 2009 to March 2010 participants will take part in additional workshops with Roberto Sifuentes, of La Pocha Nostra, and other artists/individuals through a partnership with Links Hall (dates and times to be determined by organizers and participants). On April 15–16, 2010, the workshop attendees will re-convene with La Pocha Nostra to rehearse their final participant-created performance, which will be presented at the 6th Annual Gender Fusions on Saturday, April 17, 2010.

Students are encouraged to work with their departments to use this opportunity as an independent study.

Applications due by Wednesday, September 23, 2009 5pm

Chosen participants will be notified by October 9, 2009 5pm
